Students who will be moving to the accelerated math track were informed during the week of May 21-25.

For parents of these students, there will be a meeting on Tuesday, May 29 at 6:00 pm in the media center. Information about the further requirements will be provided.

Rising 8th Grade Schedule Information

As the 2017-18 school year comes to a close, many of you are looking forward to your 8th grade classes. Several variables affect class placement choices, and most decisions are made over the summer after test scores and grades are finalized. Students attend 6 classes daily, 4 of which are “core” classes and 2 of which are non-core or electives.

Core Class Placement: Math (Pre-Algebra, Algebra*, or Geometry*), Language Arts,  U.S. History, and Science.  Students are automatically placed in advanced core classes based on grades and test scores from the previous year.  For example, students are placed in 8th grade Advanced Language Arts classes based on their 7th grade Language Arts grade and their 7th grade FSA English Language Arts scores.  FSA scores arrive in the summer, and advanced core classes are assigned after we receive scores.

Non-core or elective courses include: P. E., Band, Chorus, Yearbook, ITV, Digital Information Technology*, Spanish 1*, Elective Reading, Art, and Intensive Language Arts.

  • Band, chorus, yearbook, and ITV: students sign up with the band, chorus, yearbook, or ITV teacher.  Teachers will send their student lists to guidance and students will be placed
  • Other non-core courses: Digital Information Technology*, Elective Reading, Art, and Intensive Language Arts will be offered based on academic needs, student preference, and class  Students interested in art should fill out an art interest form in the front office.
  • Spanish 1 for high school credit is offered to students as an advanced class.  Students are automatically placed in Spanish based on Language Arts grades and FSA ELA test scores.  If you are placed in Spanish, you will receive a call during the summer giving you the choice to opt out.
  • Most students will take P. E. as 8th graders, even if they have taken P. E. in 6th or 7th   If you are unable to take P. E. due to a medical condition, please contact the guidance department and send documentation from a doctor.  If you are unable to take P. E. due to academic reasons, we will send home a P. E. Waiver for you to complete in September.
  • Gifted services will be provided through an Advanced Science   By keeping gifted services in a core class, all gifted students will be challenged in a core course and keep two elective course options.
  • *The courses marked with an asterisk are offered for high school credit.  More information on these courses is provided below.

We are pleased to offer some high school courses to qualifying middle school students.  These courses are a wonderful opportunity for students who want a challenge and are ready to start their high school transcript and high school GPA.  Please keep in mind the courses will be challenging, requiring good time management skills and communication with the teacher to succeed.  Future college and scholarship application decisions are based on the high school transcript, so these grades count for college decisions.  

High school course descriptions: 

Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 Honors (1200310 or 1200320)

The fundamental purpose of this course is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas, called units, deepen and extend understanding of linear and exponential relationships by contrasting them with each other and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend, and students engage in methods for analyzing, solving, and using quadratic functions. The Standards for Mathematical Practice apply throughout each course, and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Geometry Honors (1206310)

The fundamental purpose of the course in Geometry is to formalize and extend students’ geometric experiences from the middle grades. Students explore more complex geometric situations and deepen their explanations of geometric relationships, moving towards formal mathematical arguments.  Units include: 1) Congruence, Proof, and Constructions 2) Similarity, Proof, and Trigonometry 3) Extending to Three Dimensions 4) Connecting Algebra and Geometry Through Coordinates 5) Circles With and Without Coordinates.

Spanish 1 (0708340)
Spanish 1 introduces students to the target language and its culture. The student will develop communicative skills in all 3 modes of communication and cross-cultural understanding. Emphasis is placed on proficient communication in the language. An introduction to reading and writing is also included as well as culture, connections, comparisons, and communities.

Digital Information Technology (8207310)

This course is designed to provide a basic overview of current business and information systems and trends, and to introduce students to fundamental skills required for today’s business and academic environments. Emphasis is placed on developing fundamental computer skills. The intention of this course is to prepare students to be successful both personally and professionally in an information based society. Digital Information Technology includes the exploration and use of: databases, the internet, spreadsheets, presentation applications, management of personal information and email, word processing and document manipulation, HTML, web page design, and the integration of these programs using software that meets industry standards.
