Wendy Upton – My Story
District Mentor Coach
I am a Teacher on Special Assignment, currently working for Santa Rosa County as a District Mentor Coach. In this position, I assist and mentor first year teachers, as well as first and second year alternative certified teachers. I work hand in hand with the alternative certified teachers as they complete the Professional Development Certification Program, which is one step in receiving a Professional Teaching Certificate. This year I mentor 20 new teachers from Jay Elementary, Jay High, King Middle, Chumuckla Elementary, and Pea Ridge Elementary. I also mentor two Social Workers in our district.
Before accepting the position as a Mentor Coach, I spent 15 years in the classroom. I began my teaching career in 2003 at Pea Ridge Elementary, teaching kindergarten. I taught kindergarten for six years before moving to 2nd grade. After spending eight years at PRE, I finally moved home (Jay, FL) and transferred to Jay Elementary School, where I taught 2nd grade for four years and 5th grade ELA for three years.
For 15 years I poured my heart into teaching. The best part of everyday was the time that I spent teaching and molding the minds of my students. Little did I know that the “dream job” was still out there; being a Mentor Coach. I am now getting to share my love of teaching with my mentees, which in turn is touching hundreds of students each day.
“Wendy, I saw the feedback you were giving your mentee, and I am so impressed! You are doing an amazing job in this position.”
How Can I Help?
As a Mentor Coach, it is my job to support the professional growth of new teachers through coaching and collaboration. As a veteran teacher, I remember the stress and anxiety that came with teaching, so I can imagine how a new teacher must feel. I want to relieve as much stress as I can, whether it is helping with lesson plans, modeling a lesson, searching for resources, giving feedback, answering questions, providing emotional support, or just listening.
