Martha Gough – My Story

District Mentor Coach

I have always seen myself as a pioneer in my career with the Santa Rosa School System. My new role will be another adventure for adding experiences that will hopefully enhance and strengthen the framework for teachers who are currently enrolled in the alternative certification program and seeking a professional teaching certificate. Consequently, I just received my certification as a life coach. I plan to embrace it and live out my mission to train, equip, and empower others as I travel among my assigned schools helping new teachers.

I began with the Santa Rosa School District in 1989, as the district’s first Job Coach, and received recognition in the county’s first Employee of the Year group in 1993. I returned to college to obtain my teaching degree in Special Education from 1993-96 and was quickly hired at Pace High School where I wore many hats from 1996-2013. I designed and coordinated the first off-campus work program for students with disabilities. (This was instrumental in building the foundation of the current SITE program.) I spent a decade mentoring and coaching high school girls in volleyball and/or basketball, and I started the first middle school volleyball camp at Pace High. In 2001, when Florida began its reading initiative, I started mentoring and coaching students in reading classes along with prepping them for the state exam. In 2006, I obtained my Reading and ESOL endorsements and was employed with Beacon Educator as a part-time instructor mentoring other teachers in these areas. After becoming a National Board-Certified teacher, I mentored teachers in both the district, and statewide. In 2010, I served as a Literacy Coach and became a part of the team who were the first to experience and train others in Lesson Study as well as training secondary teachers in implementing reading in all content areas during the first years of the new Florida State Standards. In addition, I participated in the introduction and implementation of the current teacher evaluation tool. In 2013, I expanded my interest in mentoring and became a Dean of Discipline (I prefer, Positive Behavior Coach). The following year, I became an administrator and mentored and coached faculty, my favorite part of the job, among other duties.

My favorite definition for the word ‘pioneer,’ from Dictionary.com, is being “one of a group of foot soldiers detailed to make roads, dig intrenchments…to advance the main body.”  What an exciting mission for me and my cadre of co-workers. Press on!

“Martha helped me become the effective teacher I am today!”
